Stick with what you know

Why are the Southern Baptist concerned about global warming? Because it's a political football and they want to be involved in politics in the worst way. I don't know of a single other denomination that gets involved as much as they do. They would like nothing better than to be the National Church if the Church and State ammendment was ever abolished. This goes hand in hand with their "We know what's best for everyone "and "Everyone else except us is going to Hell" attitude. Over the last few weeks, I've been giving some thought to what defines different Christian denominations and I've come to the conclusion that the Evangelical Protestants (Baptists included) tend to be all about the individual ("You're going to to hell if you don't convert) where as the mainstream Protestants (Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodists, et al) and Catholics are more about "Love thy neighbor as thyself" and "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers....". If you think about it, they're (Evangelicals) really like Liberals in the sense that if they didn't have people to constanly remind about being sinners and constantly in need of being "saved" they wouldn't exist. Liberals can't exist without a constituency of victims and without telling everyone else that they're doing it all wrong without really giving any alternatives (sound familiar?). Mainstream Christianity is a way of living much like Conservatism is. My advice to them is to stick to matters of religion and leave politics to the politicians.

Come On, People!

I was sort of surprised to see this in the NY Times but it illustrates the mindset of the Islamic Jihadists. They don't think like we do and we can't communicate with them in the same way we would each other. The sooner people accept what we are dealing with, the sooner we can unite to put them out of our misery. As long as our culture and society is fragmented, they will feel they can accomplish their goals. On the other hand, if we can convince them that we are all united in exterminating them, they'll back off and find someone else to pick on. Just like the schoolyard bully, if they don't have anyone to pick on, they end up just blending into the woodwork. You'll notice that Al-Qaeda doesn't pick on Israel. It's because Israel doesn't take any crap from anyone. Hamas and the Palestinians just haven't figured that out yet because they're doing Iran's dirty work and don't realize they're being used. I know a lot of people feel betrayed by the administration's actions in Iraq but I still feel like it's better to take the battle to them rather than sit back and let them try something again on US soil.

Why can't Johnny cope in the real world.

Don't these people realize that children that are passed just to get them through the system are going to have to live in the real world where they don't get second chances, much less third or fourth chances. Failure can build character and help children realize that there are consequences to their actions if it is ministered to with the attitude that they can try harder and do better next time. Ask any inventor or composer and they'll tell you that for every success there are many failures. Irving Berlin was asked how he wrote so many beautiful pieces of music and responded that it was easy to do since he wrote 20 songs a day and most of them were crap. I'll bet the kids that are being passed through are not getting what they need in the way of encouragement and discipline from home. I realize that it's not their fault necessarily but what we're going to end up with is a bunch of young adults who are constantly whining about the world not being fair.

It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood

Here's a story from right around the corner. I can't believe they have to have a hearing to determine whether or not this guy should retain his tenure. He's been using his authority as a coach to seduce these young girls for like 15 years now. Even if it had been a single occurence, he should be fired immediately. Everyone's going to say that someone is presumed innocent until proven guilty but they forget that it only applies to a court of law. The school board has no responsibility to follow that. They need to do what's right by all the girls and their families and run this guy out of town on a rail.

Not Again

Louisiana has had it tough over the last 2 years. First, Katrina, then our illustrious governor's reaction to it, then Nagin, then Nagin again and now this. To the outside world, it must seem as though Louisiana is a state of ignorants who will vote for the first person who promises them something shiny. Although there is a large segment of the population that fits this description, there is an equally large segment of the population that is educated and concerned about the future of the state. The big problem is that the educated, concerned segment is not vocal enough. They're too nice to say something that will hurt someone's feelings or they feel like their voice won't be heard. I feel this is the same problem with government as a whole. The people who really are concerned about the overall direction of the country aren't as organized as the segments that are one issue groups. It seems as though the one issue groups get more attention from the media even though individually, they're very small. People have got to realize that if they want to effect change, they're going to have get together under a common banner (not religious) and lobby the government to get back to what it should be doing, protecting it's citizens from outside invaders and letting the states take care of what is particular to each state.
I really have lost most of what little trust I had in lawmakers in general and in federal lawmakers in particular.

Poor Rich Little Slut

Before I get started with this let me state that you're not going to catch me writing too many articles about celebrities so consider yourself lucky.

Everyone is making a huge deal about Sarah Silverman making fun of Paris Hilton on the MTV Movie Awards and how it appeared that Paris was genuinely hurt. First of all, we're talking about Paris Hilton, who has made a career out of being Paris Hilton. Everything she does is for publicity's sake so why should we feel sorry for her. She's a spoiled little rich kid who's not satisfied with being rich so she has to be famous as well and the only way she can do it is to whore herself out to the media. Maybe whore is not the right word since she's not getting paid to do it. I think the right word is slut. Rich little slut. Yeah, that sounds right.
Secondly, it appeared to me that Sarah Silverman was reading off of a teleprompter and someone else had written that joke. Her comment at the end that she felt dirty kind of confitms that. So don't get upset with Sarah Silverman, she's just the messenger. It was the writers for the show that did it. Speaking of Sarah Silverman, I've watched her show a couple of times and I'm not impressed. I understand she's trying to make fun of the overprivledged, undereducated and self-involved, but it's still not funny. South Park manages to make fun of some segment of our culture every week and it's hilarious. Maybe Sarah ought to hire the writers from South
Park.
